The Software Management Experts

TurnOver/TestBench 4.2.0 Interface

The Software Engineering Institute (SEI) and other software development experts all agree: testing should be an integral part of any good software development process. Comprehensive testing at each stage of the development cycle ensures high-quality software products that will satisfy your customers and reduce development costs. While TurnOver has a time-honored reputation as a solid change management solution, testing of changes has, up to now, been performed as a separate, parallel process requiring manual reporting of test results.

The TurnOver/TestBench interface ties TestBench testing operations into the TurnOver change management process to provide all the key components of Software Management-project planning, change management, testing, quality assurance, deployment-in one convenient place. The interface allows you to associate TestBench tests with specific TurnOver tasks so you can easily plan, schedule, and run the tests that are appropriate to the change being made. It helps you document your knowledge base and establish repeatable procedures — both necessary building blocks for continually improving your software development processes, according to the SEI.

By combining TurnOver's environment control and automation capabilities with TestBench's testing strategies and expertise, you will speed development and improve the quality of your software products. TurnOver automatically runs TestBench tests as part of a form promotion, or you can manually perform unit testing at any time. TurnOver can also automatically link test results to the originating TurnOver task so you can quickly see all details of any task, including testing history, in one location.

Immediate access to test information

The interface provides a repository, in the form of a TurnOver test plan, of all test information (tests and test results) associated with a task.

Quick testing from worklist

If you are a developer, you will appreciate how quickly you can jump to a test plan from your worklist, just by typing a user-defined option.

Launch tests with TurnOver form runs

You can specify, in your test plan, at what point in a TurnOver form run you want to kick off a TestBench test. TurnOver will automatically run a test before (pre-run) or after (post-run) running a form. A post-run test is typical for QA testing of changes after their promotion from Development to QA; a pre-run test is useful for final testing of changes before their promotion from QA to Production.

Automatic linking of test results

If you associate a TurnOver task ID with your TestBench test, TurnOver will automatically link test results to the task after a test run.

Controlled test environment

TestBench provides a safe test environment in which to preserve your test data file. By resetting the test data after each test run and reusing it, you eliminate unstable sample data.

Reporting for project leaders

You can print test plans and test results in a TurnOver report. This is particularly useful for project leaders who want to view all test activity for specific projects and tasks.

Faster development

With test results immediately available, developers detect and fix errors earlier in the development process. You spend less time testing and more time developing, and you encounter fewer problems along the way.

Testing "knowledge-base"

Availability and sharing of test information helps you plan your testing strategy. You see what kinds of tests have been used for changes in the past. By applying proven test approaches and "targeted testing," you decrease testing time and ship your application sooner.

Better cross-team communication

All members of the team-project leaders, developers, quality assurance people-can examine a task at any time to see what changes were made, what tests are planned to test the changes, and results of tests that have been run.

Audit trail of test runs

TurnOver maintains a complete history of all TestBench tests that have been run for a task. This gives auditors a full account of how much testing was done and how thoroughly it was done to ensure a quality end product.

Multi-platform support

Both TurnOver and TestBench support iSeries, Web, and client/server development, allowing you to integrate testing procedures into your Software Management process for all your applications.
